A Sri Lankan woman working as a domestic helper in Saudi Arabia says she has been severely abused for complaining about being overworked.

LT Ariyawathi's Saudi employers reportedly hammered 24 nails and needles into her hands, legs and forehead, which had to be removed later with surgery.

Sri Lanka officials are requesting a full investigation of the matter from the Saudi government’s diplomats in Colombo. The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment stated the action and said it was “cruel treatment which should be condemned”.

The Sri Lanka government further submitted a detailed report which included Lahadapurage’s statements. Her statement includes that her employer’s wife held her down while he hammered heated nails into her body because she had complained to the couple for being overworked. The nails driving into her affected nerves and blood vessels but fortunately did not affect her organs and were removed by surgeons in Sri Lanka. She is in stable condition in a Sri Lanka hospital although being given antibiotics to stave off infection

Saudi Arabia hires 1.5 million migrant workers for cheap labor who are often too poor to complain of the abuse especially if they are threatened with losing their jobs.

The Saudi government has made no comment on the sadistic behavior of the employers but it is hoped that journalists follow this story to see if the Saudi’s will prosecute this couple and bring them to justice as well as compensate the Sri Lanka maid.

Human rights organisations say "it is all too common, this "kind of story triggers the talk and debate to improve labour laws in the country.
