Vehicular movement on the Dhaka-Mawa highway remained suspended since Monday morning after Arial Beel Rakkha Committee blockaded the highway protesting the proposed Bangabandhu International Airport over an area of the wetland.
Sahjahan Badal, convener of the committee, however said they enforced the blocked programme also to protest the police action on them while demonstrating in the capital's Muktangon area on January 26 and filing of a case against 4,026 of their people.
Hundreds of people under the banner of the rakkha committee, who has been demonstrating for the last few days protesting the government decision to construct the airport at Arial Beel in Munshiganj, blocked the highway near Hashara by felling trees at about 10:30am.
People from Baroikhali, Nawabganj and Dohar were joining the demonstrators till filing of this report at about 11:30am, reports our Munshiganj correspondent.
Hundreds of vehicles got stranded on both sides of the highway due to the blocked programme, causing a huge traffic jam and immense sufferings to the commuters.
Md Shafiqul Islam, superintendent of police (SP) of Munshiganj, said tight security measures have been taken and about 500 police personnel deployed from Chanbari to Kuchiamore of the highway to fend off any violence.
Earlier on January 26, police tried to stopped the supporters of the rakkha committee from joining a rally at Muktangon in protest at the proposed Bangabandhu Airport over parts of Arial Beel.
The resistance led to clashes between demonstrators and police that left at least 30 people injured, and 20 vehicles and 30 shops vandalised in Dhaka and Munshiganj.
